What should you spend?
What you can afford. Don't overspend! It just makes the recipient feel uncomfortable.
New Baby?
If you go to visit the proud new Mom in the hospital it's always nice to bring a token gift. Remember - these gifts need to come home. Let Mom worry about getting the new baby in the car and ship the 5' giraffe to the house. We recommend something small: A bib or Burp Cloth is nice - finger puppets are also fun. You can never go wrong with food - Hospital food is icky...
New Baby - Home
What if you already sent a gift, but now you're going to visit the new family at home? Do you still need to bring a gift? Our rule is never show up empty handed. Something small is certainly appropriate. Books are a favorite, so are rattles and picture frames. And please don't forget the older sibling. A book, doll, or toy car is always a nice way to congratulate the big brother or sister.
Birthday Party
As tempting as it may be - try not to choose the same gift for everyone. Pick a few faves, and rotate them around. It's a little more work but it really is the thought that counts.
Gracious Guest
Whether you're invited to a house-warming party, or are dropping by to ooh & aah over the new kitchen a small gift is always appreciated. We like napkins & guest towels, note pads, or stationery with printed envelopes (all personalized of course). Our personalized ceramic platters and serving dishes or the "organize your new home" book are great original ideas as well.
